I was about nine years old when I was taught how to use iMovie - this immediately sparked my interest in filmmaking. Becoming a regular hobby growing up, I began making short films and trailers with my brothers, teaching myself the fundamentals of editing and sound design. This was the childhood experience that has shaped me most to this day. Filmmaking is for me, the most expressive way to channel my creative interests. Nowadays, I am confident saying I’m fully obsessed with the medium. By the time I was 15, I was watching around 2-3 films a day; some of my favourites being Wings of Desire, Mulholland Drive and Joachim Trier’s recent feature, The Worst Person in the World.
My devotion for film has expanded my knowledge on narrative theories, enhanced my technical skills for filmmaking and evoked my interest in visual arts and photography. Currently, my interest lies in various areas within the production process: editing, cinematography (camera-work and composition), directing and sound design. Over the last two years, after taking Photography A-level, I have developed a broad understanding and passion for the art-form – practicing and strengthening my skills in Photoshop and Lightroom. My style of photography has often been described as ‘cinematic’, for example, a recent project saw me taking inspiration from Wong Kar Wai’s collaboration with cinematographer Christopher Doyle to create a sense of repression and conversely, freedom in urban settings.
